One of the tools that many people find useful is the CD ladder. A CD ladder allows you to get regular access to your money, as well as helps you take advantage of rising interest rates. When you get a CD, you are locking in a rate of return. With a CD ladder, you have the opportunity, every year (or even sooner, if you set up a CD ladder with a shorter term) to renew a CD at a higher interest rate. If you need the money, you can get at it penalty free, and if you don’t, you can get a higher yield.

If you want to create a CD ladder, but are unsure of where you will get the money, you can actually get started with the help of supplemental income. This is income that you make “extra” on top of your regular salary. You can get supplemental income by working a part-time job, or by starting a side business, or by starting up a web site and monetizing it. You can also invest in dividend paying stocks, but you might need more time to build up a portfolio.

Once you start your new revenue stream, you can save it up until you have enough to open a CD. Most people set CD ladders up on a five year system. This means that you need to open five CDs. The first CD is a one-year CD, the second a two-year CD, and so on. Your fifth will be a five-year CD. The beauty of the CD ladder is that once your first CD matures, you can roll it over into a five-year CD that will mature in year six of your ladder. Once you get started, you can get the higher interest rate associated with a five-year CD every year — and a CD will mature each year. And, as interest rates begin to rise, you can lock in that higher rate.

Adding to Your CD Ladder

Your supplemental income can be a good part of this. Every year, as a CD expires, you can add money you have made from your alternative revenue stream to the CD that has just matured. This way, you are adding more money to your ladder, and building up savings at a faster rate. This is a great way to earn a little more money, and boost your cash savings.

You also have the option to start shorter CD ladders. You can open new CD ladders at appropriate intervals so that you get access to your money every six months. This can be done on a year schedule as well. Start your next five-year CD ladder six months after starting your first. This way, you can get more regular access to your money, but still enjoy the advantages of a longer CD term.

You can start ladders at whatever intervals you choose, making use of the supplemental income that you should be earning regularly. With a little planning, and some extra income, you can really boost your cash savings.
